Vic Settlement
HISTORICAL VICTORIA SETTLEMENT/COBOURG EXPLORER
Coral Bay and Port Essington are a tropical paradise; however things were very different 150 years ago. Gordon Bremer recognised Port Essington's natural attributes for a British garrison but isolation and disease beat them. Their adventures and trials, optimism and despair all come alive as your guide takes you through the ruins of Victoria Settlement.
Out boat will retrace the course of the early mariner's square riggers, passing landmarks like Gunners Quoin, Low Point, Turtle Rock, Observation Cliff and Record Point. Our guide will delve back into yesteryear, explaining the buildings and lifestyle of the early British occupation. An optional extension walk will lead to lonely gravestones in the forest, almost forgotten by history.
Take in the picnic lunch on beaches used for centuries by Macassan Trepangers, flick a lure or few in the bay, then head for home under the setting afternoon sun. A visit en-route home will call on Black Point Ranger Station for an interesting look at the Cobourg Visitors Centre.
