History of Seven Spirit Bay
Garig Gunak Barlu (Gurig) National Park is probably the Territory’s most elusive and exclusive national wonders, and most definitive the most diverse. In early 1987, the Cobourg Peninsula Sanctuary Board (CPSB) call for expressions of interest to identify potential tourism projects in the remote Coral Bay area. The Board sought to establish additional sources of income for the traditional owners, in keeping with their unique relationship to their environment. A small scale development that was based on a philosophy of protection and preservation of the wilderness, was selected by the traditional owners.
From successful selection – planning and construction processes were designed and implemented based on minimising potential impacts on the pristine environment. Site planning centred on naturally occurring groups of significant vegetation, and in natural clearings. Building activities were strictly contained, to minimise contamination of surrounding natural reserves. The areas outside the construction limits were treated as belonging to the future guests, and its preservation regarded as essential to the delivery of a wilderness experience.
And the end result of all this consideration is the commonly repeated impression from visitors - that the buildings and resort appears simply to have been placed in the landscape. We believe our mission was accomplished….
